8-2 Soccer Win Over Malaysia

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) KUALA LUMPUR. New Zealand made a feast of Malaysia in an international soccer match on Thursday night, winning 8-2. Both sides had this week taken part in an international tournament in Saigon, in which Malaysia had 1 been a semi-finalist from Section B and New Zealand had finished third in Section A. Last night, however, New Zealand looked like a champion side and its manager, Mr J. Cowie, could not remember when his country had won by such a large soccer score.

The New Zealanders were faster and more determined, and their goals all came from intelligent play. The Malaysians woke up only sporadically, although one of their goals came during a deter-

mined burst that put life into the side for about 15 minutes. New Zealand led 5-0 at the end of the first half, during which the Aucklanders—C. Shaw (centre-forward), J. Legg (left-wing) and the 17-year-old schoolboy left-half, B. Turner—had been prominent.

Shaw (three), Legg and Turner all scored in the first half.

After the interval the Malaysians looked to have more fight initially, but were completely demoralised when 1. Nemett (Wellington) dribbled 50 yards to give J. Ferrier (Otago) an easy goal. Eight minutes later Legg pulled off a similar feat.

The Malaysians forced the pace and in the seventy-fifth minute, after a goalmouth tussle, a deflected ball entered the New Zealand goal to give Malaysia its first score. Two minutes later, Malaysia still on the attack, was awarded a penalty which the left-half, Chow Kwai Lam, had no difficulty converting. From then on it was nearly all New Zealand again and in the eighty-fourth minute Legg again drove through to send Shaw in for his fourth and New Zealand’s eighth goal. After the match, Mr Cowie said that the New Zealand Football Association is to investigate the possibility of taking part in Asia’s annual soccer championship, Malaysia’s merdeka tournament. He thought Asian tournaments would offer a good opportunity for developing New Zealand soccer.

The tournament is held in Kuala Lumpur every August. New Zealand is to play Western Australia in Perth tonight, in the final match of a three-week tour.
