GERRARD TO SWIM

Time Trials In Chch The Commonwealth Games butterfly gold medallist, D. F. Gerrard (Ashburton), will be competing by invitation at the Canterbury Swimming Centre’s second round of time trials on Sunday. He will be testing himself over his specialist distance, the 220 yd. Four Christchurch members of the Olympic training squad—A. B. Kindred, Misses L. Smith, T. K. Shipston and J. Wright—will also be taking part in the trials. The other candidate for Mexico, Miss C. J. Whiting, is swimming in Hamilton this week-end. One of the most interesting encounters will be between Misses Shipston and Wright in the 220 yd medley. Kindred will be in action over 220 yd freestyle, while Miss Smith will be trying to reduce her time for 110 yd breaststroke. The Olympic trialists will probably have a second swim, if time permits. About 45 swimmers will be taking part in the trials. B. Ward, J. Tillson, M. King, J. Walker and Miss M. Darch should be prominent competitors, and there will be no little interest shown in the form of the under-14 boys over 110 yd freestyle.

Retired. —The 28-year-old J. C. Walsh, who was capped 26 times for Ireland, has announced his retirement from Rugby. He played for Munster and the British Lions.
