TROTTING GREAT ADIOS LIKELY TO WIN AGAIN
N.Z. Free-for-all Today At Addington Raceway
Great Adios will be a firm favourite to complete the New Zealand Cup—New Zealand Free-for-all double at Addington Raceway today. If, as seems likely, he does succeed, he will be the sixth horse to achieve this notable double in the last 14 years. Others to win both races in the one year have been Cardigan Bay (1963), Lordship (1962), False Step (1960), Lookaway (1957) and Johnny Globe (1954).
Great Adios came through one of the most searching tests of stamina seen on the course for years with all honours in the cup on Tuesday. He was a fairly weary horse at the finish, but that was not surprising, and his rivals were in much worse shape. Great Adios has the brilliance to complete his southern campaign with another win. He has drawn favourably at No. 3 and should be to the fore throughout as he is a brilliant beginner. Lordship, which will be trying to win the race for the third time, is expected to offer most opposition to the cup winner. Lordship had no chance in the cup after starting 60 yards and he was not knocked about. He looks a picture and could be a much fitter horse today. Julie Hanover is one of the most capable sprinting mares in commission. Had she drawn closer in her place prospects would have been second to none. Even from No. 9, her chances cannot be written off. If the pace is a true one, Happy Ending will have to make a clean beginning to get into the finish. He looks in great heart and could again extend Great Adios. Waitaki Hanover, the winner of this race 12 months ago. appeals as a place prospect, while Spry, Chequer Board, and Disband could make a bold showing. The Le Chant-Stylish Major bracket appears to dominate the Dominion Handicap, the first leg of the T.A.B. double, but they are unlikely to have things their own way. Rannach Lad and Logan Count are only two expected to display sufficient stamina to extend the favourites, while Highland Flight, Mighty Chief, Uteena, Russell and Break Through will be other sound prospects. Humphrey, Cardinal King and Co Pilot form a likely trio in the second leg, the Smithson Handicap, a race in which Quesnel, Stereo Scott, and Vista Abbey should also be prominent. Two proven stayers Corwar and Golden Fleece, form a likely combination for the oncourse concession double which will be run on the Cashmere Handicap and the Author Dillon Handicap. Fine weather is forecast and the track will be fast.
