SPACE WORK IN CANADA
Post For N.Z. Scientist
Dr M. J. McEwan, a lecturer in chemistry at the University of Canterbury, will go to Canada soon to complete a space research project for the United States Army. Dr McEwan graduated and took his Ph.D. in Canterbury an I then spent two years at the New York University, Toronto, with which is associated the Centre for Research in Experimental Space Science.
This project concerned lon molecule reactions in the upper atmosphere, Dr McEwan said. The United States Army was interested in the fundamental aspects rather than applied work. It had financed the research staff and also about $150,000 worth of equipment. Incidentally the research team had discovered a new ion molecule.
Associated with the inquiry was an investigation of how “hydrated ions” (ions with water droplets attached) occurred in the upper atmosphere. These had been discovered by American rocket research.
