FLOWER SHOW
A display of clematis by a commercial grower, Mr J. J. Keay, of Sumner, was awarded the Royal Horticultural Society's silver medal at the Canterbury Horticultural Society flower show at the show yesterday.
Mr Keay displayed 26 container grown clematis, which were about four feet high, and 50 smaller varieties. One of the judges who awarded the silver medal, Afr J. C. Fraser, said it was one of the best displays he had seen. It was the first time the Canterbury society had had a display like this, he said.
The Royal Horticultural Society’s bronze medal w r as awarded to R. A. Duncan's nursery (New Plymouth), for a display of shrubs; the Canterbury Alpine Club for a display of rock plants; Mr J. Fiecken (Redcliffs) for his display of flowering trees and shrubs; and to Gardenways, Ltd, for a display of garden furnishings. The Canterbury award ‘of merit was awarded to Mr J. Murdoch (Mayfield) for his display of rhododendrons and azaleas: L. J. Mitchell and Son, Ltd, for a display of container plants, and the Canterbury Rose Society for a display of roses. The roses were displayed in show boxes for the first time to help them last for the three days of the show
A feature of the show was the floral art display by 28 different garden clubs from Leslie Hills, Amuri, to Dunsandel. Many of the displays were entered by country garden clubs.
The Canterbury Alpine Garden Society displayed 136 varieties of alpine plans, some of which were native plants, many imported. The Canterbury Rose
Society displayed well known and popular roses including Super Star, Peace, Golden Sonne, Ena Harkness and a finely coloured rose Diamond Jubilee.
Apart from the commercial displays there were two private displays by Mr and Afrs J. Afurdoch of Mayfield, and Mr J. Fiecken of Redcliffs.
