HIS LORDSHIP IMPRESSES

Trovanta and His Lordship returned $20.70 .' i winning the on-course double at Riccarton yesterday, and Gars, a stablemate of Trovanta, completed a concession double worth $12.00 in running second to His Lordship.

Trovanta shaded Cesare Borgia and Tainoch in a spectacular finish to the Port Cooper High-weight. Trovanta,' a five-year-old half-brother to Court Belle, was the fourth favourite and at good odds after his second behind Tainoch in the corresponding race on Saturday.

Like Court Belle, he is owned by Mr H. G. Wallis, of Gore, and trained by R. J Cochrane.

B. P. Kennedy had Trovanta going along nicely in the middle of the field running to the half mile, and brought him forward for a well-timed challenge, which paid oft handsomely in the last few strides.

Cesare Borgia ran keenly, three back on the inside, coming to the straight. He took a small gap to reach a short lead going to the furlong, but

found Trovanta's challenge too strong. Tainoch also made his run from the middle of the field for a close third, but none of the others was concerned it the finish. Smart Run The Christchurch-owned, Masterton-trained His Lordship justified favouritism for the Apprentices’ Handicap with an easy win over his most strongly-supported rival, Gars, and 12 others. All the honours of the race were with the winner, Mr A G Bailey’s four-year-old dwelt slightly at the start, but dashed through quickly to follow Magic Way, Pango, and Spanish Fox into the last halfmile.

His Lordship went clear going to the furlong, and D. R. Tucker rode him out to win by three lengths from Gars, which came from near the tail of the field. Pickawyn, one of the outsiders of the field, came from the middle for third. He had no challengers for that position, finishing three lengths clear of Anasiwa. Close Finish

Wingman took the value out of first day form by winning the Stonyhurst Handicap in a spectacular finish with Shipmaster and Greenstone, the two strongest fancies. Wingman missed a start on the first day because of a rib injury. His win yesterday was some compensation for the de feat of his stablemate, Fre mont, in the New Zealand Cup last Saturday. Both are owned by Mrs H. W. Lyda, Of Levin, and their regular ridei is N. Eastwood. Wingman was in front starting the last furlong. Shipmaster was going slightly faster than the My Pal colt on the line, but had to setttle for second half a neck back Greenstone, the each way favourite, lost an almost cer tain winning chance through) hanging badly throughout the race.

Lassie’s Romance improved several places in the last half mile for fourth. It was a fair trial for the New Zealand Oaks on Saturday. Watchman and Styleman were next, only noses away, and Smiley, Lisieux, and James Arthur were close behind.

Brilliant Challenge Both Ways, a five-year-old from Awapuni, came from the tail of the field for a brilliant win in the Ashley Handicap. Mr D. W. Spring's Janus gelding took gaps brilliantly when coining from the ruck in the straight, caught Mighty Peak close to the post, and won going away by half a length. Mighty Peak was unchallenged for second, a length and a quarter clear of Wytell. L. K. Tinsley gave Both Ways time to get balanced and had him running easily alongside Conqueress at the tail of the field coming to the straight. Resmart passed Submerge tc lead into the straight, and led to the furlong, but by that time Mighty Peak was getting close, and Both Ways was being angled away from close quarters to come wider.

Once in the clear, Both Ways gathered Mighty Peak in quickly for his Impressive win. Wytell also came from fai i back for his third, just beating Royal Encounter, which) was fourth on the home turn and changed ground when close to the lead at the furlong. Rich Light, a fast finisher, was an encouraging fifth. The favourite, Conqueress, was at the tail of the field with Both Ways to the straight, and finished seventh.
