Drivers Threatened With Death

A leading Macao Grand Prix official has dismissed Chinese threats to competing drivers as a “prank” and said Asia’s most colourful motor racing event would go on as planned.
Dr Senna Fernandes, chairman of the organising committee, said by telephone from Macao that the entire death threat “plot” had been planned by a group of “teddy boys.” But Macao officials have notified the police about the threats and issued a statement saying the Government was paying much attention to the matter. The threat of death came in a circular addressed to all drivers planning to visit the tiny Portuguese enclave to compete in its fourteenth annual grand prix later this month. It named five Chinese
racing drivers and threatened them with the same fate as Hong Kong’s antiCommunist radio broadcaster, Lam Bun, who died from severe burns here in August after his car was doused in petrol and set ablaze.
