Astronaut To Attend The American astronautaquanaut, Commander M Scott Carpenter, U.S.N., would attend the fifth national scout jamboree in Christchurch >n January, 1969, Mr O. S. Field, chief executive commissioner of the Boy Scout Association, announced at a meeting of the jamboree council in Christchurch. Mr Field has just returned from the twelfth world jamboree in Idaho. During his visit he made personal representations to Commander Carpenter. Commander Carpenter was a cub scout and a boy scout in Boulder, Colorado. He is one of the original Mercury 7 astronauts and piloted the Mercury-Atlas 7 (Aurora 7) on the three-orbit flight on May 24, 1962. In 1963, the lunar excursion module became his responsibility. He was given temporary leave of absence from the space programme in the spring and summer of 1965 to serve as a training officer of the United States Navy’s Sealab 2 project. He was in charge of the submerged div ing teams during the operation and remained at a depth of 205 feet for 30 days.
