Accident Exercise

Surprise was the main ingredient of a mock accident attended by members of the Cashmere combined division of the Christchurch corps of the St John Ambulance Brigade last night. In the midst of a lecture being given on first aid by Senior Fire Officer D. Marden, a person burst into the room seeking help. He told the first-aiders that a water heater had exploded at the Somerfield Primary School, injuring 12 pupils who had been leaving after a Christmas concert practice. Within three minutes 10 of the first-aiders were at’ the school, which was in almost complete darkness, and attending to the “injured." First-aid kits, blankets, stretchers and a resuscitator were taken with the firstaiders by car to the school. No member of the division had previous knowledge of the exercise, which took about half an hour.
