Automation In Freighter

(N Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, November 8. The Blue Star Line’s new freighter New Zealand Star berthed at Auckland tonight on her maiden voyage from Britain. She carries a crew of 39 compared with the 72 carried by the old New Zealand Star, which was sold for scrap earlier this year, and which was about the same dimensions as the new ship. Captain J. Reeve, the ship’s master, said automation of the main engines had helped to reduce staff.

No engineers are needed to watch the engine controls at night. If anything should go wrong an alarm would wake the duty engineer. The ship’s main engines are controlled from the bridge. All hatchways are hydraulically operated, and at sea the ship is steered by an automatic pilot.
