Obituary

FR J. SPILLANE

The Rev. Father Joseph Spillane, a former parish priest of St Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, Manchester Street, and Provincial and Superior of Marist Mission staff in New Zealand, died suddenly in Wellington on Monday evening. Father Spillane who was born in Temuka in 1893 was ordained to the priesthood in Christchurch in 1921.

After some years in parish duties at St Mary’s, Christchurch, St Patrick’s, Napier, and St Mary’s, Wellington, he was appointed to Marist Mission staff and was well known for missions and retreats throughout New Zealand for about 15 years. He was appointed Provincial of the Society of Mary in New Zealand in 1953, an office which he held until 1959.

Father Spillane is survived by two brothers, Messrs ’ and A. Spillane, of Temuka. Father W. Spillane of St Bede’s College is his nephew.
