Research Project On Power System
Power system load-flow analysis by digital computer was studied at a Manchester University symposium by Professor J. H. Andreae, of the Canterbury University electrical engineering department, during a visit sponsored by the New Zealand Electricity Department. He returned at the week-end. The Electricity Department is interested because next year Canterbury University will begin a large and longterm research project in -this field.
The Electricity Department will finance a fellowship for the work and four post-gradu-ate students and five staff members of the electrical engineering department will be involved. Professor Andreae said the New Zealand power system would be simulated on a small digital computer which would be built up to accomodate more complex problems. The research project, said Professor Andreae, would cover the planning, operation, and protection from overload of the whole New Zealand grid to give the most eco-
nomlcal and efficient supply. It would indicate where improvements could be made and where innovations would be effective in future plans. Professor Andreae said the Manchester symposium covered all these matters and he also saw work on them at the Central Electricity Research Laboratory in England, the English Electric Company Laboratory, Queen Mary College in London, and the General Electric Company’s laboratory. in New York state. Eventually, he said, the university would build electronic equipment to be coupled to the computer.
