HEATHCOTE PETITION

Target Number Reached Mr C. C. Steel, a resident of Heathcote County, has achieved his target of 911 signatures to the petition seeking amalgamation of the county with the city of Christchurch. An intensified campaign at the week-end brought the total to 963, with several petition sheets still to come in. “It will be in the region of 1000 now,” said Mr Steel yesterday. Those eligible to sign were all adults who had resided in the county for three months. Mr Steel hopes to have the petition in the hands of the Administrator (Sir Richard Wild) within a week. The Local Government Commission would then be called on to inquire into the matter and hear submissions from interested parties. The commission could then call for a poll in the county to decide the issue. If the commission did not do that, it would be open to 15 per cent of electors to demand a poll. Mr Steel said everything in the county’s affairs would have to be examined at an inquiry by tbe commission.
