FALSE ALARM

A bloodstained heap of clothing was found in an L.A. rail waggon, one of an empty rake on Lyttelton’s No. 4 Wharf, shortly after 1 p.m yesterday. A railway shunter (Mr J. R. Guthrie, of Lyttelton) who went to move the rake of empties at once reported it to the police, and a search of the clothing by Detective Sergeant B. J. Preston, revealed, among other things, a seaman’s discharge book. Later, a seaman aboard the inter-colonial freighter Waimea, which arrived at Lyttelton from Sydney last Wednesday, was questioned and he claimed ownership of the clothing. He told the police he had been to a party aboard an overseas vessel on Friday evening and he did not remember anything except that he had only his denims on when he boarded his own vessel early on Saturday morning. According to the police there are no suspicious circumstances.
