Monowai A Undefeated In Softball Contest

By defeating Christchurch West in the senior women’s softball competition on Saturday, Monowai A became the only unbeaten team. In an exciting and dee-e game, Avon just managed to hold the young Monowai B side. Results:— Monowai A 20, Christchurch West 5. Avon 14, Monowai B 12. Spreydon, a bye. Monowai A v. Christchurch West Christchurch West, first to bat, had its first batter thrown out. J. Bellamy, with a hard drive,

made first base and scored on a fine three-bagger by J. Jones. C. Mullally drive-scored Jones and Mullally scored on a passed ball to give the side three runs. The next two innings were scoreless and L. Cameron scored in the fourth, as did A. Borlase.

Monowai, with hard batting by M. Hapuka and J. Lee and a three-bagger by C. Brown, gained seven runs in the first innings. A further six were added in the next and four more in the third. B. Turbott hit on in the fourth and, with a three-bagger by N. Beale and some good driving. Monowai scored three runs. Monowai applied a fifth-innings closure to win 20-5.

Avon v. Monowai B B. Clark (Avon) hit a home run to open the innings and this appeared to unsettle the Monowai side. Avon scoring five runs on errors before being dismissed. Avon scored another two runs in the second but were held to one run in the third. Avon next scored in the sixth innings.

M. Akapita and E. Hobson brought one run to open the Monowai scoring. Five runs in the second brought the side back into the game. One run was scored in the fifth but a sixth-innings attack brought the side to within one run of Avon. With two batters out in the last, L. Woodhead hit powerfully to the outfield with enough runners to tie the game, but a brilliant catch by N. Hands ended it. Lower grade results:— Second Grade: Christchurch West 7, Vanguard 0; Monowai 14, Kaiapoi 10; Teachers College 32, Wigram 10. Third Grade: Avon 40, United 3; Christchurch West B 24. Templeton 12: Christchurch West A 18, Monowai 8.
