11 Demonstrators Charged

AUCKLAND, Oct. 30. Eleven persons today faced charges in the Auckland Magistrate’s Court after yesterday’s Paritai Drive clash between police and demonstrators.

Three-quarters of an hour beore the sitting began, about 15 people demonstrated quietly outside the main door of the court, but only a few carried placards. The demonstration soon

broke up, many going Inside to the courtroom. Only about 15 could stand in the rear of the court, but outside the foyer was crowded. Two demonstrators stayed outside with makeshift placards reading “S.O.S. (‘Save Our Sons’)” and asking for support for the Progressive Youth Movement

Mr N. M. Izard, S.M., remanded all 11 defendants for one week, allowing bail in varying amounts from $lOO to $2OO, with similar sureties.

Sergeant C. H. Shearwood said he had had instructions to ask for sureties. The police hoped pleas would be taken next week.

Mr F. H. Halgh appeared for all but one of the defendants. One man faces five charges, and some others also have multiple charges against them: Those charged Billingham Woolf, aged 23, an unemployed teacher (disorderly behaviour); Ronald Frederick Whiteland, 34, painter (using indecent language); Arthur Heaton Mason, 17, plastics worker (offensive behaviour); Graeme Harold McLay, 18, drughouse worker (disorderly behaviour, resisting a constable, escaping from custody); James Lennox Mahoney, 17, school pupil (represented by Mr D. F. Dug-

dale (disorderly behaviour); William James Lee, 20, fitter (disorderly behaviour, two charges of assault on constable); Rex Frank Barry, 37, welder (obstructing a constable); John Rbbert Hartley Gabolinscy, 23, schoolteacher (disorderly behaviour); Warwick Trevor Graham, 21, fitter, (assaulting a constable); John Roger Sawers, 21, fitter (wilfully damaging police property, wilful damage, two charges of assaulting constables, one of resisting a constable); and William John Sawers, 52, night watchman (two charges of assaulting a constable, one of resisting a constable).
