Manuel Alvarez “El Bala” (the bullet), one of Spain’s most daring matadors, had his right leg amputated in hospital on Friday after suffering what doctors described as one of the worst wounds in the history of bullfighting. The bull plunged a horn deep into his thigh ripping open the femoral artery. El Bala survived by plunging his fist into the hole to plug the flow I of blood.—Madrid, October 29.
