VIETNAM VIEW “BLOWS COLDER”

(New Zealand Press Association)

WELLINGTON, October 30

New Zealand should be under no illusion that it was acting in accordance with the ideas of the non-Communist world in sending troops to Vietnam, the Catholic weekly, “Zealandia,” said today.

On its comment page. “Zealandia” said public opinion was now a great deal less favourable towards an increase of troops, both in New Zealand and abroad, than it had been several months ago. “Perhaps we have to send the troops, being now irrevocably committed to complying with the wishes of the United

States which does not need our troops, but does feel in need of a gesture of greater support from the allies as the wind of world opinion blows colder and keener,” said “Zealandia."

“But we should be under no illusion that we are acting in accordance with the ideas of the non-Communist world.”
