KITCHEN FIRES
Fat melting on to hot stoves caused two kitchen fires in Christchurch last evening. Mrs P. T. Hinton, of 1 Wildberry Street, was at home with her four children aged from five to 10 years when the fire broke out in her kitchen.
“My husband was at work. I put the fat on the stove and was talking to the two eldest children when they came home from swimming,” she said.
I "When I went to the kitchen the stove and wall were alight. 1 shut the kitchen off from the rest of the house and ran across the road for a telephone. “I got the children out, and put a garden hose into the kitchen. A neighbour, Mr Collett, heard my calls for help, and was using the hose when the firemen arrived,” she said. The fire brigade, when the police reported that children were in the house, sent two engines from Waltham and one from Headquarters. The fire was almost out when the firemen arrived. The alarm was given at 8.8 p.m. At 7.19 p.m., New Brighton volunteer firemen on two engines and firemen from the Woolston station went to the kitchen fire in the home of Mr R. Hall, 7 Halsey Street. The fire caused only slight damage.
