Child-Beating Instances

Although the Child Welfare Division in the Christchurch district was notified of an average of one instance of child-beating a month the figures obtained from a survey made since the beginning of this year were not spectacular, the division’s district officer (Mr M. Lyons), said on Thursday. The Child Welfare Division was assisted in its survey by the criminal cases of childbeating dealt with by the police and the courts, and hospital authorities also notified the division when a child was admitted with injuries, which suggested beating, he said. The survey was not interested in the names of offenders but only in statistics and the background of cases, he said.
