SHOOTING AT NIGHT
Change In Law Urged (From Our Own Reporter) ALEXANDRA, Oct 18. Spotlight shooters were not only a danger to stock but a danger to human life, Mr F. H. Sharland (Nelson) told the South Island Local Bodies' Association annual conference today. He was supporting a Grey County Council remit asking the Government to revise the present law of trespass to give property owners greater control, particularly over shooters. A delegate said there had been heavy stock loses on the West Coast. A plea that the law should not be made too rigid was made by Hr E. R. Young (Tapanui), a keen trout fisherman, who said he would hate to see the law so tightened that there could be no entry to streams and rivers. He thought the concern shown was about damage by shooters, and not entry to property, so what was needed was more education. Much could be done through sportsmens’ associations, he said. The conference left the executive to consider redrafting the remit to make it applicable to night shooters.
