Lake Wanaka
Sir, —The proposal by the Wanaka townsfolk to sell the “sunshine, scenery, and serenity in springtime” of their resort has much to commend it. But it is even more pleasing to see that Wanaka interests have combined with the Mount Aspiring National Park Board to design an over-all planting and beautification programme round the lakeside. The beauty of Lake Wanaka, as also of nearby Hawea, could be greatly enhanced by planting a wide range of the pine species, both native and from elsewhere in the world, on the bare steep land overlooking these lakes. Pines, of course, would thrive in this climate. If pines were planted the ultimate scenic potential would be tremendous. —Yours, etc., VULCAN. October 16, 1967.
