S.M. Changes Policy On Drunken Drivers
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Oct. 16. A New Plymouth magistrate said today he had changed bis policy towards drunken driven who were involved in accident* “because prisons are overcrowded.” Mr A. W. Yortt, S.M., said there had been no directive to the magistrates. “The Minister wouldn’t try to tell us what to do,” he said. The Deputy Secretary of Justice (Mr E. A. Missen) said that last March the Minister of Justice (Mr
Hanan) had drawn attention to serious overcrowding tn New Zealand prisons and borThe position had remained about the same. Mr Hanan had publicly suggested that the congestion might be eased by a greater use of heavy fines, but no directive had been given, said Mr Missen.
