Urgent Earthquake Research Advocated

f.V.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Oct. 15. Detailed information on the geology of earthquake areas in New Zealand should be gathered as a matter of urgency, the engineer in charge of the D.S.I.R. Physics and Engineering Laboratory (Mr R. I. Skinner) said tonight Mr Skinner has just returned from the United States

and Venezuela, where he has been investigating the effects on modern buildings of the recent Caracas earthquake. About 180 of some 1000 large buildings of modern reinforced concrete were severely damaged during the earthquake.

Buildings on rock foundations withstood the earthquakes while others of basically similar construction, built on soft ground, failed, said Mr Skinner.

This emphasised the importance of pressing ahead as soon as possible with a microzoning project. Planning for such a study was well advanced, and New i Zealand must get it comIpleted as quickly as possible.

Mr Skinner said more research should be undertaken to discover the effect of earthquakes on modern buildings of composite construction. Further consideration should also be given to the strength requirements of con- ’ crete beams in new buildings.
