Car Thefts
Car thefts are in the news again, which is not surprising. What is surprising is that there are still so many motorists who not only do not lock their cars, but who leave keys in the ignition. This is placing temptation before the light-fingered to a ridiculous degree. Regulation
There is much to be said for following West Germany’s lead and requiring steering locks or some similar device to be fitted to all new cars. After this was done in Germany, the number of car thefts dropped dramatically. So did insurance claims for cars that had been stolen and wrecked. Experts say the steering locks are best. They can be installed by the manufacturer for only a few shillings, and foil any thief who is not prepared to dismantle the steering gear, or to use a tow-truck. The lock engages automatically when the ignition key is withdrawn. Take Keys Even steering locks would not help those who leave their ignition keys in the car. Try always to take the keys when you leave the car and you will soon be doing it without thinking. Do not even leave your car in your own drive with the keys in the ignition. Better still, fit an anti-theft
