Sabell Fancied For Orari First Leg

Although there are others with more consistent form backgrounds, Sabell might be the hardest to beat in the Members Handicap, first leg of the Geraldine Racing Club’s T.A.B. doublt at Orari tomorrow.

Anyone who saw Sabell's Geraldine Cup run on the Kime course last month would have to admit he was definitely unlucky not to have paid a dividend. It is doubtful whether he would have beaten Time and Tide but he would have probably been second, instead of fourth, with a more fav-

ourable run. Sabell’s form slumped after a moderately successful autumn campaign but recently he has shown signs that he is fast approaching his best again. About this time last year the Geraldine Cup was one of the victories on Sabell’s record. Another was the Beehive Brandy Thousand at Rangiora. FORM RUNNER G. S. Barr said yesterday that Seminole would not be a starter, so Sabell has already lost one of his strongest rivals. But the Barr stable will still be represented by a form runner. Danny Kaye will contest this race instead of the open sprint Royal Master, one of the most consistent Riccarton stayers this season, is bound to be one of the strong fancies. He would probably be more at ease on a roomier track but managed the turns at Orari reasonably well in the Geraldine Cup—he finished third—after being forced over extra ground. Sir Limond and Gingerbread will strengthen the possibility of a Riccarton victory. Although he did not come up to expectations in the Geraldine Cup Sir Limond gained a stylish win against the open milers at Ashburton at his previous start. Gingerbread began another campaign among the sprinters at Orari last month. That race obviously improved her because track gallops since have been of a high standard. FRESH START A peak run from Segundo would be more than adequate to get him into the finish, but he would have to be taken on chance in this, his first race since the Grand National meeting. Of the other proven middle distance performers Beau

t Supreme appeals most. He , failed rather badly in heavy ’ ground at Wingatui last month, 1 but with better footing he could ! prove that form all wrong. His | previous record was sound. Red Chips, the open sprint winner at Orari last month. ! and Carolina, which won as a i sprinter but in less dis- | tinguished company on the same day, could vie for favouritism in the second leg, the Stew- ■ ards* Handicap. But both could be hard- ; pressed to win if Quick Flight comes up with one of his best sprint runs. This Ashburtontrained sprinter was affected at ; the start when his rider lost the use of an iron in the open sprint on the same course last month. That cost him any chance of improving on his first-up second to Krazikid at Ashburton. Fields, with form, for the T.A.B. double races are:— 1.30 p.m.— MEMBERS* HANDICAP $1400; Um. Kt Ih
