Earnslaw’s Future

(N.Z. Preet Annotation) WELLINGTON, October 12. The Minister of Railways (Mr Gordon) said today that the increasing losses incurred by the Lake Wakatipu steamer service and the prospect of heavy expenditure in replacing the vessel’s boilers in a few years made it necessary to look at the future of the service. Mr Gordon said that while recognising the undoubted interest in the Earnslaw as a tourist attraction, as well as a means of transport, the Government must look closely at its cost to the community and consider whether future requirements might be met more effectively in some other way.

The annual loss incurred by the steamer service had increased steadily since 1962 from $18,196 to $36,656 this year.

However, Mr Gordon said, he assured all concerned that there was no intention of withdrawing the steamer service without first ensuring that an acceptable alternative was available.
