(Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.)
LONDON, October 12.
New Zealanders last year lost the title they had won in 1965 as the world’s biggest meat eaters.
Figures issued yesterday by the commodities division of the Commonwealth Secretariat show that Argentinians replaced New Zealanders at the head of the meat-eating table. In 1965 New Zealanders were said to have eaten 2281 b of meat per head of population. The comparable figure for Argentina was 1931 b. Last year Argentinians consumed
2381 b, compared with the New Zealand figure of 2261 b. The New Zealand figure included 1081 b of beef and veal, 821 b of mutton and lamb, and 361 b of pig meat. The Argentine figure included 2001 b of beef and veal, 201 b of mutton and lamb and 181 b of pigmeat. Australian consumption was 1891 b per head of population and the United Kingdom consumption 1181 b. The figures do not include poultry.
