RURAL MAIL
Road Change Opposed (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Oct. 11. Proposals to change the law to allow rural mail carriers to drive on the wrong side of the road are being opposed by automobile associations and the New Zealand Road Safety Council.
The suggestion, which was made in a circular issued by the Transport Department last week, has already been rejected by the Wairarapa branch of the Automobile Association.
Today, the association’s Auckland branch followed suit, and a spokesman for the Road Safety Council said his organisation was not likely to support the idea.
A Press Association message from Dunedin says that graders are to be made available free of charge by the Clutha County Council to enable rural mailbox-holders to provide access round their boxes on the corerct side of the road so mail contractors Will be able to pull off the roadway to make deliveries.
