NEW CHAPEL CONSECRATED

The Chapel of the Upper Room at Christchurch College was consecrated by the Bishop of Christchurch (the Rt Rev. W. A. Pyatt) at Ilam yesterday.

The service was attended by the college’s board of governors, guests from the University of Canterbury, tutors, graduates of the college, many clergymen who had either graduated from the college or spent some time there, and students. Visitors from Synod were accommodated in the college dining hall where the service was relayed. Bishop Pyatt was received at the door of the chapel by the principal (the Rev. Canon J. O. Rymer), the staff, the fellows and some of the

senior students. Bishop Pyatt was handed the key which he later placed on the altar. After prayers in the chancel, at the lecturn, at the pulpit, at the sanctuary steps and at the altar, Bishop Pyatt ordered that the document of consecration be read and signed the document The chapel, a blend of ancient and modern, will seat 120 but with extra seating a

further 80 can be accommodated. It took a year to build and was consecrated debt free.

The former Bishop of Christchurch (the Rt Rev. A. K. Warren) preached the sermon. He had laid the foundation stone of the chapel shortly before he retired from the bishopric. To the students, Bishop Warren spoke about commit-
