Medbury Target Reached

Medbury School has been promised $70,580 in its $70,000 development appeal and a great deal more is expected from contributors who have notified that they will help and from other efforts associated with the appeal.

The fund-raising campaign, for which planning began last November, was not opened until May 23. In spite of the economic recession, promises had reached

$62,736 within eight weeks. The $70,000 target was set as a minimum.

With more funds the trust board expects to be able to complete its development programme more rapidly and more economically. The target has therefore been raised to $BO,OOO. To mark the passing of the initial target, a service of thanksgiving will be held on October 29 by the school chaplain (the Rev. R. A. Lowe), in St Barnabas’ Church, Fendalton. The success of the appeal will enable Medbury School:—

To acquire the Henderson property on its western boundary, with possession on June 30, 1968. The house will be used for a school dining room, kitchen, and accommodation for resident staff. The acre and threequarters of grounds will be taken into the school property. To build a new teaching block (illustrated), designed by Mr F. M. Warren (who is an old boy of the school), which will run from the existing school toward the Henderson home. This will contain four new

classrooms, music rooms, two large dormitories, two changing and locker rooms, ablutions, dispensary, and accommodation for the matron and another staff member.

The new block will be erected in two stages and tenders for the first half of 6200 sq. ft are expected to be called early next year. To augment the appeal, Mr Austen Deans, a well-known Canterbury artist, has given his painting “Frosty morning at Mesopotamia.” It will be raffled and presented to the winner at the school prizegiving in December.
