Farm Production

Sir,—“J.M.D.’s” blanket statements seem to be conceived by emotion and brought forth by muddled thinking. He is “pleased to see some of the large woolgrowers still able to fly to stock sales in their own aircraft.” Three, and only three, out of all the numbers of wool growers, did this. “Large areas of land suitable for growing wheat are not being used for that purpose.” The reason? Because “the owners think it means a little more work.” Though the bag-hole of a combine harvester has not the best working conditions, there are other reasons for wheat not being grown To sell, the wheat must pass stringent conditions laid down by the millers, and also there is a large capital outlay in machinery and plant that depreciates rapidly and is used only a few weeks a year. Everything in the garden is not always lovely, not even for the farmer.—Yours, etc., FOLEY K. October 9, 1967.
