Good Sale For Well-Bred Store Cattle

Well-bred Cattle in forward condition met a strong inquiry at the spring sale of store cattle at Addington market yesterday. Values, however, were not quite as strong as at the comparable sale last year.

The entry numbered 1738 head compared with 1147 at last year’s spring sale. Values for some of the representative hill country lines ranged from a par with last year to $5 or $6 easier, but there were reductions of Up to $lO.

In the present economic circumstances, the sale was regarded as most satisfactory. One reason for the good demand for the well-bred cattle was the presence of two buyers from Dunedin. By the end of the sale they had purchased several hundred head including the tops of the station lines. Their only serious opposition appeared to come from some of the Banks Peninsula fatteners. The quality of the offering was much the same as at last year’s sale. While there were some well-grown forward yearling cattle, there was also a considerable tail-end. The two-year-old eattle were a good selection of both Hereford and Aberdeen Angus cattle. There were also quite a number of Frieslans, but many of these were in ' very light condition. The feature of the sale was the premium that buyers paid for the Aberdeen Angus-Here-ford cross over the straight beef breeds. There was also a very strong Inquiry for two-year-old heifers. These met an animated sale, with the tops of the entry going to a Gore buyer. Feature Lines

One of the feature lines at the sale was a consignment of 122 Hereford and Aberdeen Angus two-year-old steers from A. F. S. Rutherford (Montrose). These sold from >73.50 to 197, for an average of 184. Last year’s average for 89 steers was £43.

R. G. Morris (Cheviot) sold 51 Herefords from >73 to >BO for an average of >79, compared with an average of £45 for 55 Herefords last year. The estate of A. Deans (Darfleld) showed a drop of >ll on thia season’s draft. Fifty-four Herefords sold from >OO to >77 to average 573, compared with £42 for 50 Herefords last, season.
