MAGISTRATE'S COURT $400 In Fines On Five Charges Of False Pretences

Dallas Earl Emanuel, aged 46, a shearer, was convicted on five charges of false pretences involving valueless cheques, when he appeared before Mr K. H. J. HeadifOn, S.M. in the Magistrate's Court yesterday. The cheques were for (20. cashed at the Methven Hotel, for (22 and (40 cashed with Arthur Henry Jones at Waiau for MO with Colin James Doyle at Amberley and for S2O with William Thomas at Cui verden. Emanuel was fined a total of MOO, was ordered to make restitution of (122. and to pay witnesses' expenses of $53.33 and Court costs of $l5 Emanuel pleaded not guilty to all charges and conducted his own defence. “The defendant’s evidence was evasive to say the least,” said the Magistrate. BURGLARY CHARGES lan James Barwell, aged 25. a factory worker, and Peter Barry Grant Chalmers, aged 20. a process worker, appeared for sentence on four joint chargee of burglary. Mr M. J Glue appeared for both defendants.

Barwell was sentenced to 11 months imprisonment on each charge, to be served concurrently.

Chalmers was admitted to probation for three years and ordered to make restitution of $135.62.
