Recall Of M.P.s By Voters Suggested
(N.Z. Press Association)
TAURANGA, Oct. 11.
Members of Parliament who break promises should be obliged to eome before their constituents to explain, housewives )vere told yesterday. Mrs V. Shanks, secretary of the Auckland City Housewives’ Association, said her branch was fed up with Parliamentarians promising the earth when they had no intention of keeping their promises. She told delegates at the Federation of New Zealand Housewives’ conference: “Too many politicians do this and it would be lessened if the public had the right to recall.” Mrs Shanks said some poll-
ticians gave the excuse that their parties prevented them from carrying out their promises. “But they could at least abstain from voting in direct contradiction to the promises they make,” - she said.
If constituents put their member into office on the strength of a certain promise, some explanation should have to be made if the promise was not kept Another delegate said Parliamentarians were public servants. “Other people get sacked from their jobs if they don’t do them properly —why shouldn’t M.P.S?” The conference passed a remit calling for the Introduction of the right of recall for members of Parliament
