Hulme Ready For His Biggest Test
I Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.)
LONDON. The New Zealand motor racing driver, D. Hulme, leaves London today to compete in the most vital race of his career to date—-the Mexican Grand Prix on October 22.
Should Hulme finish in fourth place or higher he is assured of becoming the first New Zealand driver to win the world’s motoa racing championship.
Even if he fails to achieve auch a placing he could still win the title for the only driver with a prospect of catch-
ing him is the Australian, J. Brabham, who must win the event to pass Huhne’s present points total. “I think I’ll be alright.” Hulme said yesterday. “Jack’s got to win to Beat me in the championship and even then if I come fourth I’m okay, f think FH be driving a pretty safe race.” Denies A Change Hulme denied rumours that he would leave the Brabham team next season to drive McLaren-B.R.M.’s for his fellow New Zealand driver, B. McLaren. He said that the rumours may have arisen because he was driving McLaren cars in sports car events in the United States. “They’ve probably assumed that because of this I’ll automatically be driving McLaren’s Grand Prix cars next year.” Hulme confirmed, however, that the Austrian driver, J. Rindt, had agreed to drive Brabham-Repcos for Brabham next year. Last week, Hulme was voted “Driver of the Year” by European motor racing correspondents.
