RESULT OF SMOKING

50,000 Died In U.K. Last Year

(N Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) LONDON, Oct. 11

More than 50,000 people died in Britain last year as a direct result of smoking, the chief medical officer of the Ministry of Health, Sir George Godber, said in his annual report. These deaths were from cancer, bronchitis and heart disease.

“The years of invalidism or ill-health must be added to the years of life lost,” he said.

“These are toe sacrifices made to a lethal folly usually begun, and for many smokers only continued, as a casual social conformity.” There were 108.158 deaths due to cancer, compared with 106,338 the year before. More than a third of the increase was due to lung cancer, and half of this was in women.
