Political Win For Gaullists

•.A. -Reuter—Copyright) PARIS, October 11.

France’s Gaullist Government scored a political victory last night by defeating a combined Left-wing and Communist move to censure it in the National Assembly by an unexpectedly large margin.

The motion to censure the Government for its economic policies obtained only 207 votes—37 short of the minimum needed to succeed. The Prime Minister, Mi

Georges Pompidou, whose Parliamentary majority on paper is only one, owed the iarge victory ove the opposition to the Centre Party. Shortly before the start of voting, the Centre Party leader, Mr Jacques Duhamel, said his group would abstain in , view of the Prime Minister’s ' willingness to discuss amendments to the present decree laws—under which the Government has initiated economic measures without reference to Parliament. This left only 73 Communist votes, 121 Left-wing federationists and a scattering of Centre and non-party votes in the 487-seat House. The vote should give the Government the go-ahead for its decree reforms of 'the health insurance system and other measures. It can also ' anticipate a relatively smooth ’ passage for its 1968 Budget bill.
