ADDINGTON MARKET Prime Hoggets Meet Good Sale; Lambs Firm

Fat hoggets met one of the best sales of the season at Addington market yesterday. With some outside competition, values appreciated for all classes, with the best of the offering selling to $7.30.

Fat cattle values were a little easier, particularly cows. There were fewer heavyweight steers than for some weeks, and it appeared that vendors had hurried their cattle into the market to catch the high values which have been ruling.

Spring lambs were yarded in increased numbers and quality was good. Values were firm on the last sale. Ewes continued to make up bulk of the fat sheep yarding. Values showed little | change, but in the wether sec- ; tion plain sheep were harder ' to sell. A big gallery followed the store sheep sale, where ewe hoggets sold to $5.30, and ewes with lambs at foot to $2.70. Except for the best pens there was little change in values. Store Sheep A large gallery followed the store sheep sale, but values continued at very realistic levels. The yarding numbered 1815 head, compared with 2125 at the last sale, and consisted of 818 hoggets, 105 breeding ewes. 339 ewes with 393 lambs at foot, and 160 wethers. Some good quality pens were included in the hogget yarding and as was the case last week, hoggets in well-grown, forward order, met the best sale. The best of the ewe hoggets sold to $5.30, this being paid for an even line of shorn Corriedales. and there was another sale at $5.20. The wether hogget offering included some very well-grown halfbreds from Marlborough, and these met quite a fair sale, the top pen making $4.55. Other sales of wether hoggets ranged from $3 to $3.60. Ewes with lambs at foot conI tinued to meet a steady inquiry. Most of the ewes were 1 woolly. Values for most of the ; offering showed little change, although several lots of shorn ewes with Down cross lambs , appeared to meet a stronger Sa shorn ewes with lambs at foot sold from $2.35. to $2.45 all counted, while woolly ewes, with lambs, sold from $2.55 to $2.70, with odd lots of very plain ewes and lambs down to $2.15. A pen of woolly one-shear ewes realised $4.90, while some three and fouf-shear woolly Romneys sold at $4.20. Two pens of Merino and quarterbred wethers sold from $2.45 to $2.90. . , _ * Sales of store sheep included: T D. McNeil (Weedons), 83 shorn halfbred ewe hoggets at $4.60: E. J. D. Good (Kekerengu), 178 shorn halfbred wether hoggets at $4 to $4.55; E. T. Smith (Broadfield), 165 shorn Corriedale ewe hoggets at $5.20 to $5.30.

Spring Lambs The spring lamb entry rose from 566 last sale to .780, Quality

was good, and this sale was fairly steady throughout. Values could be quoted as firm on last week. Values were:—

Fat Hoggets The fat iwgget sale was prob ably lite best of the season. Tms was partly because of the entry, which delined from 1440 last week to 1280. Quality was again varied, but competition was strong, and there was a very satisfactory sale for all classes. Values showed another rise of 20c, and the margain could have been greater for some of the best of the entry. Values yere: Best hoggets, 6.40 to $7, with an odd sale to $7.30. Fat Sheep Entries in the fat sheep section fell from 2820 last week to 1930, but values showed little movement. Ewes, once again, made up the bulk of the entry More of them were shorn this week, and the yarding also included more young ewes. These, however, did not sell generally for more than 20c to 30c above old ewe values. As is to be expected at this time of the year, the selection of wethers was a plain one. Only the best of the entry sold at rates comparable with last week. Plainer sheep were a little harder to s?ll. Values were: Best wethers, $5.50 to $6. Medium wethers, $5 to $5.40. Best woolly ewes, $3.20 to $3.60. Medium ewes. $2.80 to $3.10. Best shorn ewes, $2.90 to $3.20. Medium ewes, $2.50 to $2.80. Pllain ewes, down to $2. Dairy Cattle With only one heifer and 10 cows, the dairy cattle entry was a small one. The cows w’ere a mixed selection, being made up of Friesian and Jersey cross, some of which were in light condition. The sale was followed by a small gallery, and buying power was limited. The sole heifer in the yarding, a Jersey, realised $6O. Two good Friesian cows made $ll3 and $ll4 respectively, while the best of the others made from $69 to $74. with plainer types from $49 to $5B.

Store Cattle With a special spring sale of store cattle to be held at Addington today, yesterday’s offering was only a small one. . The yarding numbered 100 head, and was very nondescript. A very small gallery followed the sale, and a number of lots were passed. A pen of Aberdeen Angus yearling steerx met a very good sale, being knocked down at $6O, but there was little interest in other pens of mixed

coloured and dairy-bred steers. There was an offering of 12 bulls, and some high prices were realised. A Friesian and an Aberdeen Angus topped the section at $l4O each, and there were several sales at $lOO to $l2O. Vealers The yarding of 155 vealers was one of the best for some weeks, there being a lot of pens of top quality young cattle. Ther-3 were probably too many vealers for the demand, and as a result, values eased $2 to $3 a head. There was not a very big selection of calves, but values were much on a par with last sale, although competition was not as brisk. The best of the vealers sold from $72 to $7B, with odd sales to $B4; medium from $5B to $66, and lighter from $4B to $54. Calves sold from $36 to $42 for the best, with medium from $24 to $3O, and small from $l5 to $2l. Fat Pigs Thfre was a light yarding in the pork section, and quality was quite good.* Very few good ouality butchers’ pork were in eluded, and these met a good demand. However, light porkers met only limited inquiry. Heavy pork and light baconers —except for the best quality pigs—were easier, and values were back slightly for the odd pen of heavy baconers. Eleven

choppers were offered, and values were firm for the bust pigs. Values were.— Light pork, $15.80 to $16.90. Medium pork, $17.90 to $29.20. Heavy pork, $2l to $22.60. Light bacon, $23.40 to $25.50. Medium and heavy, $26.70 to $30.20, with one sale at $31.70. Choppers, $2l to $37.75, with one extra good pig at $39. Store Pigs The yarding in the store pig section was slightly smaller than last week’s, but the quality was somewhat better. Values were on a par with late rates, except over the last race or so. when buying power diminished. . Outside competition was again evident for the best weaners and slips, and values for. the bigger pigs were fully firm. There was a large entry in the sow section, and values for the top quality pigs were firm on late rates. Secondary sorts, however, were easier. A line of 10 in-pig Large White-Land race cross sows of mixed ages made from $35 to $5O, while one very good Large White sow, due to first litter, made $B4. Sows and Utters sold from $43 to $76. while one second-litter sow with litter of 11 realised $92. Values were: Small weaners, $5.20 to $6.90. Best weaners, $7.60 to $9.50. Slips. $lO to $ll.lO. Small and medium stores, $11.50 to $13.30. Large stores, to $15.90.
