MAGISTRATE’S COURT Prosecutions After Sale Of Unregistered Revolver

The buying and selling of an Enfield .38 revolver which was obtained as a collector's item from an unknown source several years ago led to the appearance of three men in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday on charges under the Arms Act Mr E. S. J. Crutchley, S.M., was on the bench. Edward Francis Graham, aged 18, pleaded guilty to procuring a revolver which was not subject to a permit on or about September 27. Barry Raymond Hayes, aged 20, pleaded guilty to procuring a revolver not subject to a permit, on or about May 19, and to delivering the revolver to Graham, a person not entitled to receive it. Reginald Frederick Woollett, aged 32, a clerk, pleaded guilty to delivering the revolver to another person not entitled to receive it on or about May 19. Sergeant A. D. Stevenson said the police interviewed Graham on September 28, and he admitted having bought the revolver, 11 rounds of live ammunition and nine rounds of blank ammunition, from the defendant Hayes the previous evening. Hayes admitted . having bought the revolver on or about May 19 for $24 from a boy who was to appear in the Children's Court. The same day as that transaction, a few hours earlier, the boy had bought the revolver from Woollett for $4O, said Sergeant Stevenson. Woollett had bought the revolver from an unknown source when he was collecting firearms some years ago. There was no record of the revolver having been registered in New Zealand previously, said Sergeant Stevenson. The three defendants were each fined $3O. Hayes was convicted and discharged on the charge of delivering the revolver to Graham. Confiscation of the revolver was ordered. BILLIARDS AFTER HOURS Billiards saloons were required to be closed at 10.30 p.m. under the Christchurch City Council by-laws, but the closing time was 11 p.m. under the Police Offences Act, said Mr M. F. Hobbs, counsel for Dennis Travis Murphy. The Magistrate sold Herrick had twice been convicted of assault this year, and had he been older would have gone to gaol. Herrick was represented by Mr S. G. Erber. DRUNK IN HIGH STREET Patrick Joseph O’Reilly, aged 40; a timber worker, was fined *4, in default two days’ imprisonment, for being found drunk in High Street on October 9. He had previously been convicted of drunkenness on August 31. TRIAL BY JURY Kenneth Alan Smith, aged 23, described as a cook or hotel steward, was remanded in custody until October 25 when he elected trial by jury on two charges of theft, two charges of burglary, and three charges of unlawfully taking motor vehicles. The offences were said to have taken place between September 21 and 23 at Hokitika. smith was also remanded until October 25 when he elected trial by jury on a charge of the burglary of Otahuna Motors, Tai Tapu, pn September 19. Stringer), pleaded guilty to charges that on July 20 he drove carelessly, drove while disqualified and failed to stop after an accident. A short distance down the road Coutts stopped his car and called out ta Gorringe and then grabbed him by the lapel of his over coat and struck him on the jgw. He damaged Gorringe’s cycle lamp Coutts denied representing that he was a member of the police. CARELESS DRIVING Warren William Knight, aged 36, a watersider (Mr P. % R. Thompson), was fined $l6 and was ordered to pay witnesses' expenses of $4 op a charge of careless driving. He pleaded riot guilty.
