TROTTING Merit In Lordship’s Win At Trials

Lordship, which will race next either at Oamaru or Kaikoura towards the end of the month, gave a dashing display at the Ashburton trials yesterday. He won with a lot in hand by four lengths in the outstanding time of 3min 12 4-ssec for 12 furlongs, the last half-mile in 60 2-ssec.

There was considerable merit in Lordship’s effort because the track was carrying a heavy sole of grass. The track was soft bn the home turn, where excess watering had been carried out the previous day. r Soldier Gal led out Afte

three furlongs and ■ half Atanui took over, to be passed half a furlong later by Lordchip. The pace increased sharply «nd Lordship sprinted clear at the half-mile. From then he was not at top speed and he passed the post with a lead of four lengths over AHakasam, which came home most impressively. Thunder Royal was two lengths back third, with the same distance to Thunderina, Chief .Command, Semloh andSpace Cadet. Good Chase showed that he was making rapid progress in preparation for. his three-year-old debut when hb - finished boldly for second, a neck behind Humphrey, in the second heat Good'Chase was a shade slow away, but he soon recovered his lost ground. He challenged boldly over the final furlong, and was going as well as the*''mucb more tightly-assessed Hum-phrey-at the finish. The winter took 3:18 « for the 12 in 1:3 2-5. . Roydon Frost finished boldly from a fairly handy position to take third place. He, too, looks ready to make a successful fresh start . Jr Alpine Lady bad evenr chance, but she was beaten off fourth, ahead of Caplin, Pacing Simba and Stormy Petrel. Other sound efforts were returned by Lords, Royal Armour, Bye Bye Bill and Laurinda. Two-year-olds A Brahman—Solar filly from D. P. Grice’s Prebbleton team paced the fastest mile in the two heats of the two-year-ojd parade, run over one mile. She led out but was studied behind Mosstyn after three furlongs. She joined the lead near the furlong post and without being pushed she won easily by a neck in 2:15 4-5, the last half-mile in the good time of 1:4 4-5. Mosstyn (Johnny Globe— Marawhiti) finished a long way in front of King Size (King Creed—Sporting Lady,) a member of S. I. Henderson’s Orari team. A Fallacy—Loyal Ducrow colt in R. L. Tatterson's Templeton team finished on fairly well for fourth, ahead of Prince Forbes, a colt by Hi Lo’s Forbes from Globe Princess, in 0. E. Hooper's Rakaia team. A Johnny- Globe—Raidette colt in J. G. Hampton's team made most of the' pace and held oh to dead-heat for first with General Frost (Thurber Frost—Arania), a member of G. B. Noble’s team.. General Ftost ran on strongly without being pushed and was most, impressive. Third, some distant from the dead-heaters, was Sunny Morn (Thurber Frost—Lahithea). with the Hi Lo’s Forbes Friendly Grattan colt in C. V.
