LINCOLN APPEAL
Board Refuses Grant
An appeal by Lincoln College for support for its $350,000 residential building appeal was refused by the Central Canterbury Electric Power Board yesterday. “We can’t put on paper the good Lincoln College does, but this is not the concern of the board,” said the chairman (Mr W. A. Newton). “They don’t want a fiver—they are looking for big money, and we haven’t got it,” said Mr P. G. Wederell. Mr L. T. Griffith asked if this was another example of the Government shelving its responsibilities. “The college is getting a four to one Government subsidy,” said Mr Newton. The college said it was a big consumer of’ power from the board, but if the board contributed, by the same token the Crown Crystal Glass Company or Alloy Steel Ltd could ask for help. On the motion of Mr L. F. Chamberlain, no action was taken.
