PRIESTLY CELIBACY

Change Wanted In U.S. (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) NEW YORK, Oct. 10. A group of Roman Catholic priests has released figures showing that 53.2 per cent of American diocesan priests responding to a poll favour a change in Church rules to permit priests to marry, the “New York Times” News Service reported. The organisation, the National Association for Pastoral Renewal, reported that support for the change was strongest among younger priests. Figures showed that 65.2 per cent of the assistant pastors who replied favoured optional, rather than mandatory, celibacy, compared with 38.1 per cent of the pastors. The association was founded a year ago to work for modification of the 800-year-old rule that prohibits priests from marrying.
