FORECAST TO MIDNIGHT Situation.—A weak ridge of high pressure covers New Zealand; the depression in the Tasman Sea and its associated cold front is moving east wards towards New Zealand. Forecast:
Canterbury and Kaikoura Coast. —Light or moderate variable winds, north-easterlies predominating; some rain in the Alps: scattered areas of drizzle elsewhere, with some areas of coastal fog; moderate day temperatures. Marlborough except Kaikoura Coast.—Winds between north-west and north, fresh in exposed areas but decreasing and possibly becoming variable later today; mainly cloudy, a few showers about the Sounds but more general rain later in the day; mild day temperatures. Nelson, Buller and Westland.—Freshening northerly to easterly winds; cloudy and mild with scattered rain.
Outlook. —Mainly cloudy: some rain likely chiefly in northern and eastern districts. CHRISTCHURCH READINGS
