First-Day Covers
Sir, —Is any supervision exercised by the Post Office or other responsible official in .the preparation of first-day covers for the new issues of stamps Several years ago, a cover was issued for the sale of the health stamps with the apostrophe misplaced so that it read “Childrens’ health is New Zealand’s wealth.” Yesterday when 1 went to buy covers for the new issue of stamps to celebrate the Tasman centennial I was shocked to see “Centennary” on the cover. These first-day covers go to every country in the world, and one feels that these errors are no recommendation for the standard of education in New Zealand. I would like to be assured that there will not be any further errors.—Yours, etc., KIWI. September 15, 1967.
[The Chief Postmaster (Mr M. E. Wilson) replies: “Any firm, organisation, or interested person may produce first-day covers, and these are later accepted without question through the post. The health stamp cover mentioned was issued by the Health Camps Federation The only first-day cover issued by the Post Office is a standard one, suitable for use with any new issue of stamps, and on sale continuously at post offices.”]
