Modern Government Is Big Business

There is an important place in the Public Service for the young man or woman with good academic qualifications who can assume the increasing, varied and challenging responsibilities of administrative and professional work in Government Departments.

Modern government is “big business”: departments perform tasks of national importance and control some of New Zealand’s largest and most modern enterprises. They provide ample scope and satisfaction ■ for graduates in science, agriculture, law, commerce, arts, and engineering. In almost every department there are excellent opportunities for graduates.

For many positions in the Public Service a university degree is a prerequisite. To help recruit people with suitable qualifications, the State Services Commission offers a variety of specialist awards for full-time study. The following specialist study awards are offered. The departments in which bursars will be employed are shown in brackets:

Apiculture: For study towards B.Ag.Sc., at Lincoln College or at Massey University of Manawatu. Applicants must ‘ have U.E. or H.S.C., but preference will be given to students who have completed one year or more of the course, have a good physique and personality, and some knowledge of beekeeping or biology. (Agriculture Department.)

Architecture: For study towards B.Arch. or the Diploma in Architecture at the University of Auckland. Applicants must have U.E. plus H.S.C., and have passed physics and mathematics. (Ministry of Works.)

Biochemistry: For study towards B.Sc. or, preferably, B.Sc. (Hons.) in biochemistry at Otago or Victoria University. Applicants must have passed at least three appropriate subjects of B.Sc. (Agriculture Department.) k,

Chemistry: For study towards B.Sc. Applicants must have U.E. including chemistry and mathematics, but preference will be given to university undergraduates with one or two years’ successful study in chemistry. (Justice Department.)

Engineering: For study towards a degree in chemical, civil, electrical or mechanical engineering. Applicants must have U.E., but preference will be given to students with H.S.C., who obtained good marks in appropriate subjects in the University Entrance Scholarship Examination. (Ministry of Works, N.Z. Electricity, Civil Aviation, N.Z. Forest Service, Scientific and Industrial Research and Transport Departments.)

Farm Advisory: For study towards B.Ag.Sc. with farm management at Lincoln College or Massey University of Manawatu. Applicants must have U.E. or H.S'.C., but preference will be given to students who have completed one year or more of the course. (Agriculture Department.)

Farm Economics: For study towards B.Ag.Sc. in agricultural economics. Applicants must have U.E. or H.S.C., but preference will be given to students who have completed one year or more of the course. Graduates in maths or economics may also apply. They will normally be required to spend one year with the department before proceeding to the Dip.Ag.Sc. (economics options) course at Lincoln College. (Agriculture Department.)

Food Technology: For study towards B.Tech (Food) at Massey University of. Manawatu. On graduation, bursars spend up to four years in the dairy industry before starting work with the Department

of Agriculture. Applicants must have U.E. or H.S.C., including chemistry, physics, and mathematics, but preference will be given to students who have completed one year or more of the course. (Agriculture Department.)

Forester Traineeships: For study towards B.Sc. at any university. On graduation, trainees may be sent overseas to study for a degree in forestry. Applicants must have U.E. in science subjects, but preference will be given to those with one or two successful years’ study towards B.Sc. (N.Z. Forest Service.)

Horticulture: For study towards B.Hort.Sc. at Lincoln College or Massey University of Manawatu. Applicants must have U.E. or H.S.C., but preference will be given to students who have completed one year or more of the course. Graduates in botany may also apply. They will normally be required to spend a year with the Department before proceeding to Dip.Ag.Sc. (horticulture preferences) at Lincoln College, or Dip. Hort. Sc. at Massey. (Agriculture Department.)

Land Surveying: For study towards Dip.L.S. The Intermediate year may be taken at any university, but subsequent years must be at Otago University. Applicants must have U.E., but preference will be given to those who have H.S.C. or have passed the Intermediate. (Lands and Survey Department.)

Microbiology: For study towards B.Sc. or preferably B.Sc. (Hons.). Applicants must have passed at least three appropriate subjects of B.Sc. (Agriculture Department.)

Physiology: For study towards B.Sc. or preferably B.Sc. (Hons.), specialising in physiology. Applicants

must have passed at least three appropriate subjects of B.Sc. (Agriculture Department.)

Science: For study towards B.Sc., B.Sc. (Hons.), or M-Sc. Applicants must have U.E. plus H.S.C. or University Entrance Scholarship Examination with good marks in science subjects. (N.Z. Forest Service, Scientific and Industrial Research, Internal Affairs, and Transport Departments.)

Soil Conservation: For study towards B.Ag.Sc. (with soil science). Applicants must have U.E. or H.S.C but preference will be given to students who have completed one year or more of the course. B.Sc. graduates may also apply. They will normally be required to spend one year with the Department before proceeding to the Dip.Ag.Sc. (soil options) course at Lincoln College. (Agriculture Department.)

Town Planning. For study towards Dip.T.P. at Auckland University. Applicants must be engaged in planning work and have an acceptable degree in engineering, surveying, etc. (Ministry of Works, Lands and SurveyDepartment.)

Veterinary: For study towards B.V.Sc. at Massey University of Manawatu or University of Queensland. Applicants must have first examination of B.V.Sc. or B.Ag.Sc. (Agriculture Department.)

Viticulture: For study towards B.Sc. Applicants must have U.E. and preferably H.S.C., have good physique and personality. (Agriculture Department.)

Wool: For study towards B.Ag.Sc. (wool options) and either Cert, in Wool (Lincoln College) or Diploma in Wool (Massey University of Manawatu). (Agriculture Department.)
