Governor's Plea For Sign

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Sept. 20. A sentimental plea from the Governor-Gen-eral (Sir Bernard Fergusson) resulted in the National Roads Board deciding today to restore a “Beware of the Wind” sign on the Wellington side of the summit of Rimutaka Hill. The board received a let-

ter from Sir Bernard Fergusson at its meeting today stating: “Ever since I was a boy I have always had a soft spot for the notice near the top of the Rimutakas, ‘Beware of the Wind.’ “It is, in fact, world famous, and on my return to this country, I greeted it as an old friend. “The last time 1 came over the Rimutakas I was saddened to see that it had been replaced by some other

phrase—‘Frequent Gusts of Wind,’ or some such. “Do let’s put it back for old times’ sake,” wrote Sir Bernard Fergusson. “Wind Gusts” is the approved warning sign for wind hazard in the “Manual of Traffic Signs and Markings" issued by the National Roads Board in 1965. The chairman of the board (Mr Allen) said there was no doubt the Governor-General’s opinion was'right.
