AUSTRALIAN CHANGE
Acceptance In Adelaide
A change of state Government. and the success encountered in other states, were the main reasons why South Australia was moving to extend, its hours of liquor trading, according to an Adelaide travel agent. Mr C. Walsh, in Christchurch yesterday. Mr Walsh was one of a party of 10 Australian travel agents completing a tour of the South Island.
He said the general public in Australia was not really affected by the change in hours and the volume of drink consumed had not increased. “It came up before the state Parliament as a conscience vote, and got an overwhelming majority,” said Mr Walsh. “The city hotels have cabarets and you never see people wandering round the town looking for a drink as you do in New Zealand.
"We realise we must satisfy the tourists and that six (o’clock closing is just stupid.”
