(New Zealand Press Association)
INVERCARGILL, September 19. Eleven cases of sexual interference
with young children have been reported to the police in Invercargill in the last four months. The children, both boys and girls, range in age from three to 10.
Two other children in the same age group, both girls, were assaulted, one by being roughly handled and the other by being chased by a “male person” wielding a stick.
! Two 15-year-old boys, both secondary school pupils, will appear in the Invercargill Children’s Court on a total of 10 charges. Another 15-year-old boy. not attending school, is being questioned about the other three offences. One of the schoolboys faces eight charges and the other two.
None of the children concerned was seriously physically hurt by the assaults, but they all suffered shock and distress as a result.
A circular letter concerning offences against young children has been distributed to parents by the headmaster of Waverley Park School (Mr A. S. H. Cutler). The letter contains a memorandum circulated to schools by the Southland Education Board setting out advice to children to keep them from being victims of child molesters. The information was given to the board by the police, in consultation with the Education Department.
