ALBATROSS SURVIVORS

(N.Z. Press Association > DUNEDIN, Sept. 20. j Three chicks have been successfully reared at the Royal albatross sanctuary at Taiaroa Head this season—in spite of a disastrous fire which swept the area in January., “One chick has left. The other two are ready to go in the first suitable weather,” Mr S. Sharpe, who has looked after the colony for 16 years, said today.

After the fire it was feared there were only two young survivors. But Mr Sharpe found an unhatched egg which he kept warm for 21 days—mainly under his jersey—till an adult pair returned to the colony to act as foster parents.
